Get to Know The People You Want to Motivate

Motivating others is a big part of being a mover and a shaker.

Don’t make the mistake I made in thinking that everyone is and should be motivated the same way I you are.  Here are two things you can do to help you get people moving in the right direction.

Get to Know the People You Want to Motivate
In the video above I share a story about one of my employees when I was a manager at Intel who was a pain in the butt.  He was perceived as a slacker by his peers and honestly, I felt the same way.

One day we were talking about hiking and he invited me to go on a hike with him and a few other people.  It was the best thing I did for our relationship and my perception of this guy.  On the hike he took charge, was super charing about the environment and the people he was leading.  I would not have know this side of him if I did not take the change to get to know him.

The same is true for you as you lead people or just have to get them motivated as a team member.  Get to know them beyond their current role and you’ll be in a position to see who they really are and how you can motivate them.

Be a Scientist and Always Experiment With Different Methods
When it comes to motivating others you have to constantly experiment to get an understanding of what works and what doesn’t…at the moment (unfortunately this is fluid and what motivated someone can shift).

One person may need and like the pressure and constant reminder, while other may just want you to tell them the end goal and let them get after it (still be sure to say thank you.  Recognition goes a long way).

In either case, you only find out by trying different things and paying attention to the results and reactions you get.

As always, my goal is to help you Run The Point (Take Action) from where you are, with what you have.
